Visitors Needed for Middlesex County Jail Visitors Program

Volunteer Your Time And Support Someone in Need

Dear friends,

Middlesex County residents and others awaiting deportation hearings are being detained without hope of parole or release in the county jail and they need you. Locked up away from their families and communities, they need to know we care.  Middlesex County First Friends is placing volunteer visitors inside the jail to provide detained people with a sense of community and connection with the outside.

The Middlesex County Jail detains about 150 people, mainly men without legal papers, each day. Middlesex County First Friends have worked with Jail administrators to create a visitor program aimed at providing a sense of community and support to those unfortunate enough to be incarcerated. We need your help to provide emotional support to our brothers detained in the county jail.  It is as simple as sitting with another person and listening to them or sharing your experiences with them.

As a Visitor Volunteer, you would offer your time and conversation and attention to our unfortunate brothers as they await their deportation hearings.

What to Expect:
. Volunteers will be required to attend a short training.  Trainings will be held to accommodate your schedule.
. Volunteers must agree to visit detained people at least twice a month.  Each visit lasts thirty minutes.  Visits will be face-to-face on Thursdays and Fridays or through video-conferencing on week-ends.
. First Friends must comply with jail policies for volunteer service programs and provide personal information as part of the jail's required back-ground check.
. Volunteers are not allowed to bring any items in for the person they are visiting.
. Visiting Hours available to Middlesex County First Friends volunteers will be Thursday and Friday evenings from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, and week-ends from 8 am-2:30 pm.
. The jail is located in North Brunswick on Apple Orchard Lane at Route 130.

We look forward to seeing you. Thank you for doing your part to provide community contact to people incarcerated for no other reason than they are awaiting deportation hearings.
