*VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE KICKS OFF TO REGISTER 2,500 NEW AMERICANS AND
BRING IMMIGRANT VOICES TO THE POLLS THIS NOVEMBER*
* *
*First phase of program to support immigrants to active citizenship*
*WHAT*: A Consortium of Long Island groups will launch their non
partisan Citizenship and Community Engagement Initiative to register
recently naturalized and eligible Americans for the November election, the
first step in half year effort to bring 2,500 immigrants into the election
process.
The consortium will guide Long Island immigrants through the path to
citizenship, tracking progress through each barrier to naturalization and to
active citizenship where their often unrepresented voices will be heard at
the polls.
Each organization will reach out to immigrant communities using their
particular community relationships and organizing tactics.
*WHO*: The Citizenship and Community Engagement Consortium:
ACORN, Catholic Charities, Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN),
Center for Working Families, Long Island Progressive Coalition, Long Island
Immigrant Alliance, New York Civic Participation Project (NYCPP), and the
Workplace Project.
Local clergy, including Reverend Allen Ramirez.
Immigrant residents of Long Island.
The partners will be supported by NALEO Educational
Fund's *Ya es hora ¡Ve Y Vota!* Campaign, a Spanish-language media campaign
designed to inform and mobilize immigrants to participate in elections.
*WHEN*: 10:30am, Thursday, September 11, 2008.
*WHERE*: Nassau County Board of Elections, 400 County Seat Dr.,
Mineola, Long Island.
