Join us at the next

KC Iraq Task Force Monthly Meeting

Monday, January 7th at 6:30pm

at the AFSC office, 4405 Gillham Rd., KCMO

At this meeting we will focus on organizing a Community Peace Festival marking the 5th Anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. Help us involve youth groups, congregations, social service organizations, activists, artists and others.

Help us build a stronger more powerful peace movement!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Peace Supporters,

Dear Hopeful Concerned Citizen,

We invite you to join with others who believe our nation could be creating a just, sustainable and peaceful future but instead is going drastically in the wrong direction. We believe that there are many in our community who believe in and work for this positive future and that together we can more quickly realize this future. We encourage you to join us in a community peace festival and week of peace action to take place the week leading up to the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq war, March 12 to 19th.

During that week we, working with community, service, faith, civil rights, student, advocacy, arts and other groups, will organize and publicize activities in various locations which celebrate peace and educate the community.

One high point of the week will be a Saturday March 15 community peace festival (location to be determined) with groups organizing booths, activities and areas for arts, music, theatre, games, workshops, talks, puppet parade, etc. on a theme broader than the Iraq War - perhaps something like "The Path To Peace And Justice." The specific language is yet to be determined.

We have brainstormed a number of things that could take place including an art exhibit, film festival, peace mural, a parade with large puppets, Iraqi refugee camp simulation, health screening, keynote speaker, activities for children... We will also invite social service, environmental, social change, faith and other groups to create interactive booths reflecting their part or vision of our "path to peace, justice and sustainability." This might go along with other activities during the week like a lobby day, exhibits, performances, etc.

We would welcome your group's participation in helping to create this festival. Groups are invited to:

* Send a representative to a planning meeting,

* create a peace event during the week of peace action,

* create a booth at the Community Peace Festival (suggested donation $25),

* endorse the event and provide volunteer help (suggested donation $50- booth space included and listed as endorser) or

* sponsor the event (suggested donation $100- booth space included and listed as sponsor).

Scholarships for groups unable to make the suggested donation can be negotiated.

Our next planning meeting will be on Monday, January 7 at 6:30pm at the American Friends Service Committee office, 4405 Gillham Rd., KCMO.

Interested persons can contact me at 816 931-5256 to explore this further or to lets us know how your group will be involve.

Again thank you for your interest and any help you might be able to provide. To date 3,895 U.S. troops have been killed. Estimates of Iraqi deaths are as high as 1.2 million and over 4 million Iraqis are refugees. Each day 720 million dollars is spent on the Iraq occupation, money which could be sent on so many other human and community needs!

We thank you for working with us to find a better way for humanity to live together.

Sincerely,

Ira Harritt

12/29

Bhutto broke her agreement with the CIA, she wanted to talk with the Islamists

According to the manar newspaper the CIA in coordination with Musharraf's ISI [International Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan] are behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

Musharraf briefed the Americans that Bhutto contacted the Islamic movement in Pakistan to reach an agreement for reconciliation leading to future stability of the country and breaking Pakistan link with American war-on -terror.

This explanation seems logical, few days ago two British diplomats were expelled from Afghanistan for conducting talks with the Taliban [check out this link also, very funny and true said about the Americans:

The Americans have a way of painting this black and white,......For them it's like a cowboy film - you're either a good guy or a bad guy.]

Remember when Karzai told the CNN that he was being held back from serious peace negotiations by the US?, Bhutto was convinced that Bin Laden is dead [watch Al-Jazeera video], so there is no need for the US fake so called "war-o-terror".

Kansas City Plant Public Hearing

January 9th, 2008, 7 pm

All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church

4501 Walnut St., KCMO 64111

ACTION ALERT

Come to PeaceWorks KC's Hearing on the Environmental Assessment (EA) of the proposed Kansas City Plant's $500 million facility.

WHEN: Wednesday, January 9, 2008 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm at the ALL SOULS UNITARIAN CHURCH (4501 Walnut St., KC,M0 - South on Main St., left on 45th St. near the Holiday Inn and the Nelson Art Galery).

GOAL: We had 100 people attend the Scoping Hearing on May 23, 2007 sponsored by the National Nuclear Security Administration and the General Service Administration. Our goal is to have at least 150 people come to the hearing and refuse to let their voices be silent. Send this email to at least 5 friends. All views are welcomed.

WHY ATTEND: The Department of Energy denied the Kansas City community a public hearing on the proposed new facility that will make 85% of all the nuclear components of U.S. nuclear weapons. We have been left out of a national debate on nuclear weapons and the major role Kansas City's plant will play in the nuclear weapons complex. This proposed new facility will lead to a net loss of 650 employees. The EA, also, says nothing about the decontamination, demolition, and environmental remediation of the old Kansas City Plant that would cost $287 million.

If you want to read the full text of the Environmental Assessment, go to http://www.gsa.gov/kansascityplant <http://www.gsa.gov/kansascityplant> . If you cannot attend the hearing on January 9th, send written comment on the draft EA to Carlos Salazar, General Service Administration, 1500 Bannister Road, Room 2191 (6PTA), Kansas City Mo. 64131. Comments may also be emailed to NNSA-KC at gsa.gov <http://us.f838.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=NNSA-KC@gsa.gov> .

If you have any questions, call Donna Constantineau (913) 281-5499.

The deadline for public comment is January 14th, 2008.

No other public input will be accepted by the General

Services Administration after this date.

YOU ARE ASKED TO EXPRESS YOUR CONCERNS

ALL ARE WELCOME

Kansas City Amnesty International Group

to host an event

to mark the Sixth Anniversary of Guantánamo Bay

Amnesty International group # 115 will host a film screening and art event at the YWCA Theatre on Friday, January 11th to mark the sixth anniversary of the first arrival of detainees at the U.S.-controlled detention facility in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

Over the past six years, the United States has held more than 700 men at Guantánamo, and only a few have even been charged with a crime. This regime of indefinite detention is in clear violation of U.S. domestic law and international law.

"The practices pioneered at Guantánamo Bay have corroded America's moral standing. Guantánamo symbolizes the Bush administration's human rights violations in the war on terror. The America we believe in would shut down Guantánamo now.

WHAT: Screening of "The Road To Guantánamo, a poetry reading, and art exhibit

WHEN: January 11th- Time to be announced

WHERE: YWCA Theatre and Art Gallery 1017 N 6th Street Kansas City, KS

CONTACT: Kara Erickson 913 321-5867

Will you take a stand to help us denounce this facility?

"Guantanamo Bay and Its Implications for the Rule of Law"

Wednesday, January 30, 2008, 7:30pm

For more than a dozen years as a lawyer for the U.S. Navy, Charles Swift took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Swift was assigned to defend Salim Ahmed Jamdan, a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay. Swift appealed his client's writ of habeas corpus petition to the U.S. Supreme Court and defeated the Bush administration when the court found its actions violated the Geneva Conventions and the United States Uniform Code of Military Justice. He will deliver the Alpha Sigma Nu-Vincent Daues, S.J., Lecture on his experiences.

Lecture begins at 7:30pm and is held in the Mabee Theater, Sedgwick Hall, Rockhurst University, 53 & Troost, KCMO. It is free and open to the public.

In Washington, DC, we will hold a permitted demonstration at the National Mall followed by an orange jumpsuit procession to the Supreme Court. There will also be solidarity demonstrations in Chicago, Miami, London and Paris, with more being added every day. We invite you to come to Washington and participate, or else join or plan an action in your own community. We also encourage people around the world to wear orange t-shirts, armbands or other orange clothing on January 11th to mark the date.

"Prisoners of Guantánamo March."

Hundreds marched in last year's procession

A provocative street theater performance involving people wearing orange jump suits and black hoods. With your help, we will form a prisoner contingent including as many protesters as there are prisoners.

Two years ago Witness Against Torture drew international attention after it walked to Guantánamo to visit the prisoners. Upon its return, the group has organized vigils, marches, nonviolent direct actions and educational events to expose and decry the administration's lawlessness, build awareness about torture and indefinite detention, and forge human ties with the prisoners at Guantánamo and their families.

Protest the hiring of the Weekly Standard's Willam Kristol by the New York Times

Hey Folks,

I'm asking you to write letters protesting the hiring of the Weekly Standard's Willam Kristol by the New York Times as an oped writer. Kristol was a leading agitator for the Iraq war and wants one with Iran. He is a neocon. I'm appalled that the NYTimes would hire him. He just got released from his contract with Time Magazine, as did Charles Krauthammer, and I was feeling great about that--until seeing that Kristol has been hired by the Times. Awful. They need to hear from folks in the heartland that this is unacceptable. For more info, you can start here http://www.amconmag.com/03_24_03/cover.html (surprised?) or do your own research on this creep.

Letters should go to letters at nytimes.com (possibly omitting the word CREEP;-))

I've already sent mine.

Disgraceful.

Justicia! The Ethical Clothing Label

The Maquiladora Dignidad y Justicia is pleased to announce the expansion of the Justicia! line for 2008. The innovative ethical clothing manufacturer and wholesaler, sponsored by AFSC's grassroots partner, Comité Fronterizo De Obrer at s <http://www.cfomaquiladoras.org/english%20site/dj.en.html> (Border Committee of Workers) is now producing t-shirts, tote bags, sweatshirts, and women's cut t-shirts (most are available in organic cotton).

Maquiladora Dignidad y Justicia (Dignity & Justice Maquiladora Co.) and its Justicia! label, were established in the border city of Piedras Negras, Mexico by and for garment workers forced out of their jobs after standing up for their rights in the maquiladoras.

Today, these 8 women have been able to pay themselves double the standard wages in the maquiladoras and determine the terms of their employment. Even a few substantial wholesale orders will make a significant impact in keeping the current workers employed and in supporting continued growth of this important project.

While many advocates are focusing on campaigning for sweat-free legislation (and we certainly support that), there are only a few producers of sweat-free, fair trade and green apparel in the world. AFSC has supported Dignidad y Justicia since its inception because it represents a concrete alternative model to women on the ground directly affected by economic globalization.

So as you begin your conference and promotional planning for 2008, keep in mind the Justicia! label's t-shirts, sweatshirts, and tote bags and please, spread the word to your colleagues and friends in other organizations and coalitions working for social justice. Contact the AFSC's Mexico-U.S. Border Program <mailto:ahaynes at afsc.org?subject=Justicia!> (215-241-7134) in Philadelphia for more information. Thank you!

**Please note, Justicia! is currently only able to fill wholesale orders.
